SAE ITC EVPKI Consortium™ Launches SAE EVPKI Production Environment at Key Ceremony

SAE EVPKI to begin on-boarding compliant PKI Root Certificate Authorities.

DETROIT, June 2, 2025 -- The Electric Vehicle Public Key Infrastructure Consortium (EVPKI Consortium) is excited to announce the launch of the SAE EVPKI Solution production environment at last week's Key Ceremony hosted by EVPKI technical Contractor, DigiCert, Inc. The Key Ceremony is the critical first step that now allows the EVPKI Consortium and SAE Industry Technologies Consortia (SAE ITC) to begin on-boarding compliant PKI Root Certificate Authorities (PKI Root CAs) as compliant SAE EVPKI suppliers.

Each PKI Root CA supplier must go through an extensive on-boarding process to ensure compliance with all SAE EVPKI technical, operational, and governance requirements. The on-boarding will be performed by Eonti, Inc., a technical Contractor for the EVPKI Consortium. The evaluation will include detailed interviews, audit, and testing as well as resolution of noted gaps in compliance. Once the supplier is deemed compliant, the EVPKI Consortium will approve them to be placed on the SAE EVPKI Certificate Trust List (CTL).

"SAE ITC is pleased to celebrate the launch of the SAE EVPKI production environment," said Tim Weisenberger, SAE ITC EVPKI Director. "We thank our world-class development team led by our Policy Authority and our technical Contractor DigiCert. This milestone allows us to begin on-boarding compliant PKI Root CAs to EVPKI and targeting operational rollout in 2025."

The SAE EVPKI CTL is the engine that will create trust among EV ecosystem companies and allow PKI interoperability at plug-in between any EV and any EV Charger in a common, reliable, and trusted way. PKI interoperability has long been a major barrier to scaling up the global EV Ecosystem and achieving the promise of decades of EV development by industry.

"Making EV charging truly secure and interoperable has required unprecedented collaboration across the EV ecosystem," said Mike Nelson, GVP of Digital Trust at DigiCert. "DigiCert is proud to lead this effort as the anchor of trust and technical backbone of the SAE EVPKI, delivering trusted technology and the operational discipline needed to turn vision into reality. This milestone is a testament to what's possible when industry comes together to solve real-world challenges."

SAE EVPKI is moving at full speed ahead! In 2025, we will

  • On-board compliant PKI CAs and build an open, competitive EVPKI supply market.
  • Develop EVPKI programs for industry testing, development, and training.
  • Field the SAE EVPKI solution.

Our strength is in our members! Visit our web page at https://www.sae-itc.com/programs/evpki to inquire about membership and for free download of SAE EVPKI documents.
