Newly released updates of the Future9 competencies align with national and international frameworks that define essential skills for K-12 and beyond
BOSTON, Feb. 25, 2025 -- reDesign, an organization supporting competency-based education for more than 15 years, has updated its Future9 Competency Framework, a free and open resource for K-12 system leaders and educators. The Future9 updates are accompanied by the release of free guides and activities to support implementation of the competencies in classrooms, schools, and communities, in addition to translations in four languages: Arabic, French, Portuguese, and Spanish.
These updates reflect additional piloting and research undertaken this year, including crosswalks between the Future9 and 14 well-known skill and competency frameworks. "Across international and national approaches to teaching and learning, there is increasingly broad agreement on what skills young people should be building in order to be equipped to create thriving lives, now and in the future," said reDesign's Executive Director, Antonia Rudenstine. "If your school or district has created a Learner Profile – or you are already using a framework like the Durable Skills or 21st Century Skills – the Future9's K-12 observable, developmental, skill progressions provide an actionable bridge as you move to classroom implementation."
The Future9 Competencies, which can be adopted or adapted for school or system use, are informed by the latest and most relevant research on cognitive, social-emotional, and child and youth development, as well as national and international data regarding the future of work, community life, and higher education. The new release is accompanied by an open-source Competency-based Education Resource Hub that includes activities, implementation guides, and templates; alongside the Future9 translations and an updated review of the research.
