FROM THE OFFICE OF THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF ACRD
WASHINGTON, March 24, 2025 -- In a watershed moment for Social Security advocacy, President Joe Biden will take the stage for his first public address since leaving office to deliver a pivotal address at the 2025 Conference of Advocates, Counselors, and Representatives for the Disabled (ACRD).
The President's unprecedented participation comes as Social Security stands at a historic crossroads, with millions of Americans' financial security hanging in the balance. In recent weeks, action has been initiated by the Trump Administration that many fear constitutes the dismantling of the Social Security Administration (SSA) and the Social Security program on which millions of older Americans depend.
President Biden's timely address signals recognition of the ACRD Conference as the definitive national forum for shaping the future of disability rights and retirement security. This year's gathering will convene an unprecedented coalition of congressional leaders, policymakers, legal experts, and grassroots advocates committed to safeguarding Social Security.
Traditionally, former presidents take time away from the public eye before re-engaging on major policy issues. In light of the unprecedented threats facing Social Security, however, the President has chosen this pivotal moment for his immediate re-engagement.
"We are honored President Biden has selected the 2025 ACRD Conference to address the nation," said Governor Martin O'Malley, former Commissioner of the Social Security Administration and an advisor to ACRD. "Social Security is an earned benefit – not an entitlement – and it is a core element of America's promise and purpose to lift people out of poverty. As a result, there is widespread concern the progress recently made for Social Security will be tragically reversed."
"The threat facing Social Security is dire," added Rachel Buck, Executive Director of ACRD, "and the urgency of this moment demands nothing less than engagement by all concerned and caring Americans. As a result, we urge all members and strategic partners to join us for this historic gathering. The alliances formed at this conference will echo through the lives of millions of Americans who depend on Social Security for their dignity and independence."
