Linux Foundation Welcomes OpenTofu, the Terraform™ Fork

The OpenTofu community is thrilled to announce the general availability of OpenTofu, a robust open-source fork of Terraform™, now officially recognized as a production-ready project under the Linux Foundation.

This development marks a significant milestone in the evolution of infrastructure as code (IaC), offering a powerful and flexible alternative for users seeking innovative solutions.

After four months of collaborative development involving over five dozen developers, this milestone unveils a seamless migration path for Terraform users within the OpenTofu project. OpenTofu 1.6 brings exciting features, such as advanced testing for stability, an improved S3 state backend, a new registry for easy publishing, and numerous performance enhancements, bug fixes, and other improvements.

OpenTofu 1.7, driven by community requests, brings unique features absent in Terraform, like client-side state encryption, parameterizable elements and third-party extensibility through a new plugin system.

OpenTofu is now officially production-ready with its latest release. Explore more about OpenTofu, get involved, contribute and access the repository on their website and GitHub.
