Infrasense conducted aerial infrared thermography (aerial IR) surveys on 227 bridge decks along various corridors throughout Indiana. The evaluations resulted in condition quantities, including overlay debonding and rebar-level delamination quantities detected with aerial IR. Infrared and plan- view images, as well as condition maps, were provided for each bridge alongside the quantitative summary.
INDIANAPOLIS, April 16, 2025 -- Infrasense evaluated the condition of 227 bridge decks located along various major corridors across Indiana. The aerial IR data and high-resolution visual data were collected from a fixed- wing aircraft operated by a licensed pilot and within all applicable FAA regulations. The data includes a sequence of IR and visual images collected as the airplane flies over each surveyed bridge. For short bridges there was usually one image of the sequence that covered the entire bridge, and that image served as the basis for analysis. For longer bridges, it was necessary to stitch together multiple images to obtain a single composite plan-view image.
Additional image processing of the stitched infrared plan-views was carried out using proprietary software that analyzes the pixels within the bridge deck. An "adaptive histogram equalization" enhancement is applied to increase contrast, which makes it easier for delaminations to be identified and mapped. A separate "transverse normalization" enhancement is also applied to remove thermal banding that can be attributed to structural elements such as girders or surface wearing in the wheelpaths, creating better contrast of localized thermal anomalies. The aerial IR and visual plan-views were reviewed and analyzed to map areas of rebar-level delamination, patching, and spalling. The results consisted of a comprehensive, quantitative summary with corresponding plan-view maps.
