Developers can now register to join the new Gloo open source AI platform for building values-aligned AI
BOULDER, Colo., Feb. 6, 2025 -- Gloo, the technology platform connecting the faith ecosystem, announced the launch of Gloo Open, its new open source artificial intelligence initiative, which underscores a growing trend toward transparency and collaboration in AI. The initiative centers on the Gloo commitment to provide values-aligned AI for human flourishing through its research, models, non-copyrighted datasets, and standards framework. The announcement, made alongside industry leaders and partners, signals a significant shift toward values-aligned AI development.

At the core of the Gloo Open initiative is its innovative approach to creating values-aligned AI models on behalf of its users, which includes developers as well as publishers, parachurch organizations and more. The approach involves cloning established open source models — including Meta and Mistral — onto its secure, isolated infrastructure. The Gloo proprietary training pipeline is then applied to improve the models with values-aligned principles using available data sets that can be personalized by the user or organization. This process enables users to specify the values they would like the model to align to and address censorship issues and biases they wish to minimize that come with many mainstream AI models.

Gloo is also using the Global Flourishing Study research to develop advanced AI models for human flourishing, with the study's findings slated for open source release later in 2025. The Global Flourishing Study is a five-year research initiative in collaboration between scholars at the Human Flourishing Program at Harvard and Baylor's Institute for Studies of Religion, and in partnership with Gallup and the Center for Open Science.
The ongoing Gloo approach and commitment to open source AI mirrors similar commitments seen from industry giants like Meta, Hugging Face and others.
Expanding on conventional performance metrics, Gloo will be introducing a comprehensive framework of standards to evaluate AI models on values-driven criteria. The framework assesses alignment with user-designated core values which could include a range of dimensions like community engagement, family life, spiritual formation, vocational health, and physical and mental wellness, and more. The standards also address areas like accuracy to specific content including the Bible, and historical and theological contexts. These standards pave the way for more rigorous improvement and validation of AI models, ensuring that AI outputs are aligned with the values of its developers and users.
