HONG KONG, March 17, 2025 -- CLPe today (March 17) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with a leading Mainland manufacturer of construction machinery Zoomlion Heavy Industry Science and Technology Company Limited (Zoomlion) and Sanroc International (Hong Kong) Limited (Sanroc) planning to introduce Hong Kong's first five-axis electric heavy crane lorry and provide one-stop battery leasing, charging, swapping, and maintenance service for electric heavy trucks, to promote green transport and support the HKSAR government to achieve its carbon neutrality goal by 2050.
Transport accounts for nearly 20% of total carbon emissions in Hong Kong. Since the launch of the HKSAR Government's Hong Kong Roadmap on Popularisation of Electric Vehicles in 2021, the electric vehicle (EV) market has grown rapidly. The number of EVs including private cars, taxis, minibuses, and buses has risen to more than 110,000 while the potential for the electric heavy truck sector remains enormous. CLPe has partnered with Zoomlion and Sanroc with a plan to introduce approximately 80 units of five-axis electric heavy crane lorry to the city for the first time. The three parties will pool their expertise in energy management, construction machinery, as well as logistics and transport to explore the construction of battery charging and swapping station for electric heavy trucks in Hong Kong, and the provision of one-stop battery leasing and maintenance services, to support the transport and logistics sector in its energy transition. These services are expected to be available in the second half of this year.
The 38-tonne and five-axis electric heavy crane lorry features a crane-lorry design and will be used mainly for transport and construction. The battery has a range of around 250 km, catering for long-distance transportation of heavy trucks. The trucks can be charged to 70% in just one hour. Customers can also opt for the battery swapping service, which takes only 15 minutes, significantly enhancing the efficiency of electric heavy trucks.
CLPe Managing Director Mr Ringo Ng said, "CLPe is committed to promoting the popularisation of electric vehicles. Currently, we provide charging services for electric private cars and commercial vehicles in Hong Kong and the Mainland. This collaboration further expands our charging business to electric heavy trucks, marking a significant milestone for Hong Kong in promoting electric transportation and accelerating the development of green construction. We are delighted to collaborate with a leading Mainland enterprise, Zoomlion, and a Hong Kong-based company, Sanroc, to introduce new productive forces in green transportation from the Mainland, contributing to Hong Kong's green transformation."
Zoomlion Co-President Mr Kai Luo remarked, "As a global leading manufacturer of construction machinery, Zoomlion Heavy Industry will increase its investment in the new energy market, creating a modern industrial system for construction machinery. This will support a new model for green and smart construction sites, promote green intelligent construction, and contribute to the sustainable development of the Mainland."
Sanroc Managing Director Mr Jonathan Siu commented, "Sanroc International began discussions with CLPe in 2022. We recognised the enormous potential for carbon reduction in Hong Kong's construction industry. We have therefore worked together to promote the use of new energy machinery and heavy vehicles. Through this collaboration, we hope to contribute to a greener future and promote sustainable development in Hong Kong's construction industry."
