KING OF PRUSSIA, Pa., May 6, 2025 -- With four in ten Americans saying they have seriously considered moving out of the U.S. in the next two years, the importance of having reliable, affordable international health insurance comes into greater focus. According to a new survey conducted by Harris Poll on behalf of GeoBlue and International Citizens Insurance (ICI), 31% of potential expats cite concerns about healthcare coverage abroad being the reason they haven't yet taken the leap to move abroad. This trumped concerns about their work and social life abroad. Of these potential expats, the number one thing that would make it easier to relocate and move abroad is finding affordable and reliable international health insurance.
International Health Insurance Provides Peace of Mind to Expats
Once abroad, 82% of expats say knowing they have access to healthcare and coverage wherever they are in the world gives them peace of mind. It also helps them smooth over the complexities of navigating a foreign healthcare system, with 76% saying their international health insurance makes them feel more confident doing so.
Additionally, expats rely heavily on their international health coverage, with nearly half using it to access routine medical care and 57% having used it to cover an unexpected illness or medical need.
Growing Focus on Moving Abroad
The importance of international health insurance is expected to grow as an increasing number of people are considering moving abroad. A recent Harris Poll survey indicates that 42% of Americans considered moving out of the U.S. in the next two years, with groups such as Gen Z (63%), LGBTQIA+ (61%), Hispanic (61%), Black (57%) and Democrats (52%) having higher rates of consideration. Additionally, the Covid-19 pandemic and resulting work-from-home arrangements have contributed to the growth of digital nomads – those who work remotely while traveling. The 2024 State of Independence Report conducted by MBO Partners found that 18.1 million Americans consider themselves digital nomads, representing an increase of over 147% since 2019.
While most expats surveyed in the GeoBlue-ICI study moved abroad with international health insurance, 36% did not. Data from other studies indicates that consumers often believe they can rely on their existing U.S. coverage or don't know they need health insurance while abroad. With domestic health plans providing little to no coverage abroad, international health insurance will continue to play an important role in supporting those who choose the expat lifestyle.
"If you're moving abroad and planning to use your existing domestic health plan, you risk finding yourself with little to no coverage overseas," says GeoBlue's Don Van Scyoc, VP, individual sales. "Beyond the financial safeguards, international health insurance provides peace of mind and ensures you can get and pay for care, from the routine to the critical. This research shows that having international health insurance is a critical aspect of the moving and living abroad experience and one that consumers should not go without."
About the Study
The study of 428 consumers, conducted in December 2024 and January 2025, polled former or current expats and those considering moving abroad. Expats, defined as individuals who had relocated to another country for at least 3 months, comprised two-thirds of survey respondents and potential expats were one-third.
