As more organizations are upgrading their SAP ERP systems to the recent version of S/4HANA to align with SAP’s 2027 migration timeline, it’s increasingly important for tax stakeholders to be included in strategic planning throughout large-scale ERP transformation projects.
Businesses leveraging a legacy tax engine or native-SAP tax functionality should evaluate the benefits of upgrading to an enterprise tax engine as part of this larger technology project. For almost all tax professionals, upgrading to an enterprise tax engine leads to an increase in tax accuracy, and efficiency improvements within the tax determination and reporting activities. However, this process can often seem daunting due to the time, stress and expense involved.
For these reasons, it is tempting to tackle the large ERP project first, and address the tax engine upgrade at a later date or worse, try to patch it to the older, inefficient technology and processes. However, due to the complexities of tax, and the interconnectedness of the systems, a congruent upgrade will yield significant enhancements to the business processes in the long run.
